Ohh - I came out from this hiking trip at a different place in my walk through life.... a peace settled on me with the meditative moments before each hike, and settled with soft music on Jonathan's ukulele and us all humming or singing.. very peaceful way toward a good night's sleep. I thank you, Jonathan

This was a unique opportunity to not only experience the awesome wilderness but also to share thoughts with kindred folks (all on the precipice of life changing elderly encounters). The hike (walk) was nicely adapted to our capabilities.

Being outdoors in the wilderness with other senior adults is a special gift. We define "wilderness" as more than 3 miles away from an outhouse. But our spirits are lifted by a blue sky, or rocks in the water, or delicate wildflowers. Sharing with others who understand that the slowing down of our bodies does not dim the wonderment, excitement and joy of our souls is a welcome respite.

My Wilderness Journey was beyond expectations. Jonathan is an expert group leader both on the trail and in discussions. You won’t regret signing up.

Thank you for leading us on the spiritual retreat backpacking in Dark Canyon via the Sundance trail. Jonathan was clear on what to expect, how to train, and gear to bring. Jonathan leads with honesty, humor, & kindness; he explains, gives options, & makes you think. The question of the day, assigned in the morning and discussed in the evening helps figure yourself out. A hot cup of tea and singing while he plays the ukulele is a lovely evening ritual. This is my 2nd trip with Jonathan and I'd go on another!

This was my first backpacking/hiking/camping adventure, and it was spectacular. Jonathan took careful steps to ensure the entire experience was safe, fun and educational. I learned many things, not the least being the deep respect of our forests and wilderness. Spiritual reflections further enhanced the awareness of being one of a group, and being one with nature. Thank you, Jonathan!

“This was my first backpacking trip in over two decades, and thanks to Jonathan's expertise, I felt prepared, comfortable and excited even before getting out on the trails. The physical and spiritual challenge of this hike, both carefully curated by Jonathan, were just enough for me to both feel the strain, but not so much that I was unable to appreciate the majesty of the woods, mountains, and lake. A well balanced experience that I plan to repeat again.”

“I had the most amazing, challenging and inspiring time on my Wilderness Journey! I was pushed beyond what I thought were my limits, accomplished way more than I would have thought I could. Pastor and Leader Jonathan Malone is a wonderful and supportive leader and guide. The wonder of being immersed in Creation and the blessings of community made this a life changing experience!”

We all bonded well and responded to challenging readings and questions. I was amazed that we bonded so easily. This made the experience really special—

I wasn't sure what to expect – it's just the wilderness, after all – but the experience was nothing short of profound. There's something truly unique about being detached, in solitude, yet with friends who are on journeys of their own. Looking at your life from the backcountry vantage point, everything seems possible. Jonathan is a gifted leader. He crafted an experience that was "just right", complete with friendships and memories that I hope will last a lifetime.

Jonathan is so knowledgeable, so much fun, and such a great leader! He comes with a plan, but so effortlessly invites everyone into the day-to-day planning and thinking. And the food was what I would call "gourmet backcountry!" Thanks for such a great trip!

My Wilderness Journeys trip was fantastic!
I went on the beginner hike to Tirrell Pond in the Adirondacks. Jonathan was great to work with from the start and facilitated clear, helpful preparation and follow-through. Keep in mind during your discernment session that Jonathan will form the vibe of the trip based upon what you want to get out of it! Take some time to understand where you are and where you want to be!
Tirrell Pond was absolutely lovely, as was the day-hike around the pond. The option to rent gear was incredibly helpful, and my group was awesome. I found that it was important to speak up and share feelings, experiences, needs, and states of mind as the trip progressed.
If you’ve been thinking about going backpacking but aren’t sure how to begin, this is 100% the place to start. If you’ve been backpacking forever, you will ALSO likely find that Jonathan will give you a challenge to rise to. All levels of outdoors-people will enjoy a Wilderness Journeys trip and the catered focus on experiencing the Divine in the wilderness.
